Latest Release Information for AQ 16

The most current release of Ancestral Quest 16 is Build 12. All changes made to AQ 16 since its initial release are listed below.

Changes in Build 12 (10/12/2023)

Enhancements to General Features

  • Ancestry.com: Ancestry.com removed their World Connect (RootsWeb) pages. Correspondingly, AQ's TreeTips feature was adjusted to remove this search option.
  • Check/Repair: A few more rare database issues are now found and fixed.

Bug Fixes to General Features

  • Descendant DropLine Chart: Some rare situations were identified that caused the formatting of the report to be skewed. Fixed.
  • Ahnentafel Book Report: In rare cases marriage notes were not showing properly. Fixed.
  • Advanced Filtering: Users identified a couple of situations where the filter logic didn't perform as expected. Fixed.

Enhancements to FamilySearch and LDS Features

  • Check for Changes: FamilySearch introduced a change to their API that caused AQ to stop correctly identifying changes in the FamilySearch records. AQ was upgraded to handle that API change.
  • Temple Codes: The list of temple codes in AQ was updated to handle newer temples.

Bug Fixes to FamilySearch and LDS Features

  • AFN: The AFN (Ancestral File Number) has been obsolete for many years, and was removed in AQ 16. Users identified a few places in AQ where the AFN was still mentioned. Fixed.

Several other minor enhancements and fixes were made.

Changes in Build 11 (3/15/2022)

Bug Fixes to General Features

  • Quick Entry: In rare cases when the same place was entered both with UPPER case and with Mixed Case, AQ could lock up while attempting to display a suggestion for a partially entered place. Fixed.

Enhancements to FamilySearch and LDS Features

  • Auto Merge: Added option to auto merge records on FamilySearch PID.

Several other minor enhancements and fixes were made.

Changes in Build 10 (8/5/2021)

Enhancements to FamilySearch and LDS Features

  • FamilySearch Login: FamilySearch is changing the way Ancestral Quest handles the process of allowing users to log in to FamilySearch, which allows syncing of data and retrieving 'Hints' from FamilySearch. This build uses the new login method. FamilySearch is allowing users of AQ to login using either the old or new method for the time being, but within a few months, FamilySearch will disable the old method. Users who sync data with FamilySearch, or use FamilySearch hinting, should update to this build soon.

Bug Fixes to FamilySearch and LDS Features

  • Check for Changes: When records were imported to a user's database from FamilySearch during the 'Import Family Lines' feature, the version information for these records was not being recorded, hence the 'Check for Changes' feature indicated that all such records had been changed. Fixed.

Several other minor enhancements and fixes were made.

Changes in Build 9 (4/19/2021)

Note to users who sync their data with FamilySearch Family Tree: The primary reason behind this build being released on 4/19/21 is to give you the opportunity to update your copy of AQ before FamilySearch makes a change on or about 4/23/21. This build will allow AQ to continue to sync with FamilySearch after that change is made, whereas earlier builds of AQ will no longer sync with FamilySearch after that scheduled change goes into effect. See below for more details.

If you do not sync your data with FamilySearch Family Tree, there is no urgency for you to update your copy of AQ, as you won't be affected by this change.

If you do sync your data with FamilySearch Family Tree, and are seeing this notice to update AFTER FamilySearch has already made their change, please do not attempt to sync your data with FamilySearch until after you have updated to this build, or to a later build or version, of AQ. (Do not use AQ 16.0.8 or earlier to sync with FamilySearch.)

Enhancements to General Features

  • Opening Recent Files: A new screen has been added to allow users to open a database from a list of recently opened files. On the Mac version, this option is available on the 'File' menu. (The Windows version already has a list of recently opened files on the 'File' menu.) For both Mac and Windows versions, this screen is also available when no database is open, and AQ presents a list of options to open, import, or restore files.
  • Check/Repair: An option was added to speed up the Check/Repair process by bypassing the checking of name indexes. This option should only be used if your database is large enough that the checking of names takes a long time.
  • Change Log: The Change Log feature has been updated to handle some of the newer data items. Those who use the Change Log will want to flush the entries in their change log before using this new build. If they have change log entries they wish to retain, they may want to print the contents of the log prior to updating to this new build.

Bug Fixes to General Features

  • Searching for Names: If you have names in your file that contain characters that are not in the English alphabet, sometimes as you search for names in an alphabetic listing, the process seems to jump to an unexpected position in the list. Fixed.

Enhancements to FamilySearch and LDS Features

  • Keeping in Sync with FamilySearch: FamilySearch is about to make a minor change that has a major effect on Ancestral Quest. This build (9) prepares Ancestral Quest for that change. Once FamilySearch implements their change (scheduled for 4/23/21), older versions and builds of AQ will stop working with FamilySearch. If you use the features in AQ that allow you to synchronize your data with FamilySearch, you MUST update your copy of AQ to this build (16.0.9) or later before attempting to sync data with FamilySearch after they make this scheduled change.

A few other minor enhancements and fixes were made.

Changes in Build 8 (9/23/2020)

Enhancements to General Features

  • TreeTips: Improvements were made to AQ's ability to find FamilySearch hints, and make them available.
  • Check/Repair: Some additional database issues are now detected and fixed.

Bug Fixes to General Features

  • Resizable Windows: Ancestral Quest allows the user to resize and position some windows, such as Notes, Merge and various FamilySearch sync screens, and then the user can expect AQ to remember the size and position of these screens the next time they are used. On rare occasions, some users have experienced that some such screens seemed to get lost (they were displayed off of a monitor), and that AQ seemed to 'freeze' until the window was either moved into view or closed.
In build 7, a test was added to make sure that AQ would properly remember and re-display such screens. Unfortunately, a bug was introduced that caused more users to experience this 'freezing' of AQ. Fixed.
  • Same Sex Relationships in PAF Database: In version 16, the ability to record same-sex partners was created for the AQ database. The PAF database cannot record such relationships, but a bug was found wherein AQ didn't block this properly. Thus if a user attempted to create a same-sex relationship in a PAF database, it would cause some corruption in the PAF file for that relationship. Fixed.

Bug Fixes to FamilySearch and LDS Features

  • Family Sync Screen: If FamilySearch already had a relationship event (such as Marriage), and an attempt was made to add a secondary event of the same type, this failed. Fixed.

A few other minor enhancements and fixes were made.

Changes in Build 7 (9/4/2020)

Enhancements to General Features

  • Never Married Icon: On the Family View, if a child has their record marked as "Never Married", a small box will now show on the arrow icon to the left of the child.
  • Check/Fix: If the Check/Fix function detects that a husband and wife have been swapped, it will now swap them back rather than instruct you to manually swap them.

Bug Fixes to General Features

  • Ancestry.com Links on Pedigree View: In build 6, the functionality of the Ancestry.com links was shifted from specific links on the Pedigree view to the new TreeTips popup window. However, for some users, the Pedigree View continued to show these links. They have been removed from the name boxes of the Pedigree View, and now are only available from the TreeTips screen.

Enhancements to FamilySearch and LDS Features

  • Duplicates Check when Reserving LDS Ordinances: In the past, AQ would remind you, when you started reserving ordinances, that you should check each person for duplicates on FamilySearch prior to making reservations. Now, AQ will check for duplicates for each person prior to the reservation process, and give you the chance to resolve possible duplicates on FamilySearch.

Bug Fixes to FamilySearch and LDS Features

  • Reserving LDS Ordinances: On the 'Reserve Ordinances/Create Batches' screen, after making adjustments to the reservation status of ordinances for a person, the display for that person was not automatically updated to show the new adjustments. Fixed.
  • Manage Batch - Update Local: On the 'Manage Batch' screen, if you clicked on the 'Update Local' button, the Confirmation and Initiatory local ordinances were not updated. Fixed.

A few other minor enhancements and fixes were made.

Changes in Build 6 (8/10/2020)

Enhancements to General Features

  • TreeTips (Research Assistance) Consolidation: The various hint icons, menu items and toolbar icons which provide research assistance in AQ have been consilidated into a single icon and screen. The biggest advantages of this change are: 1) The Ancestry.com Links, which occupied a lot of room on the Pedigree screen, are now consolidated to free up the room they used to take; 2) Users who were not familiar with all the various research options were unable to take advantage of them -- these are now easier to find and use.

Enhancements to FamilySearch and LDS Features

  • Keeping Pace with FamilySearch: FamilySearch is implementing some changes to the API which allows AQ to sync with FamilySearch Family Tree. This new build has been updated to work with these changes. When FamilySearch makes these changes effective in the near future, the older builds and versions of AQ will no longer sync with FamilySearch. (This won't affect other portions of AQ -- just those features that sync with FamilySearch.) If you use AQ to sync with FamilySearch, this is a critical update for you.

A few other minor enhancements and fixes were made.

Changes in Build 5 (2/18/2020)

  • Syncing with FamilySearch: A minor bug was discovered in build 4 while syncing with FamilySearch which caused AQ to crash under certain situations. Fixed.

Note: Build 4 was only available for a few hours before the above bug was noticed, so only a few users had time to download build 4. For these few users, this build 5 will correct the one bug they may have experienced. For most users, please review the list of enhancements and fixes for build 4 below, as your update to build 5 from build 3 will include these additional changes.

Changes in Build 4 (2/13/2020)

Enhancements to General Features

  • Name List View, Custom Reports, Filter/Focus: Added several new fields to these listing tools: Marriage Type, Marriage Status, Same-sex relationship indicator, Phonetic and Romanized names, Name Template setting, and these LDS ordinance items: Confirmation Date and Place, Initiatory Date and Temple code.
  • File Search: When searching for AQ family files, the screen is wider to more easily see full path names.

Bug Fixes to General Features

  • Charts with Photos: In some rare cases, if you printed a chart with photos, and you were working from the Descendants, Individual or Timeline views, the photos might not print properly. Fixed.

Enhancements to FamilySearch and LDS Features

  • Confirmation/Initiatory Ordinances: These ordinances were not showing in all screens and reports. We believe we have now added these to all appropriate screens and reports.
  • Couple Facts: FamilySearch has recently added some new facts and events related to couples, including a "Living Together" event type, which corresponds to AQ's "Not Married" type. AQ now syncs with these new types.
  • Reserved Ordinances: When using the "Review/Selectively Sync" screen to review your local record of an ancestor with the FamilySearch record of the same ancestor, if LDS ordinances are "In Progress", AQ will show when the ordinance was reserved and by whom.

Bug Fixes to FamilySearch and LDS Features

  • Importing from FamilySearch: In some cases, when importing a standard event while on the "Review/Selectively Sync" screen, the data would be placed into an "Other" event rather than in the primary event fields. Fixed.

A few other minor enhancements and fixes were made.

Changes in Build 3 (12/07/2019)

Enhancements to General Features

  • Ancestry.com World Connect Search: Ancestry.com has made recent changes that require a different method of searching for records in the World Connect project. We understand that they are not finished with these changes, but this build of AQ allows users, at least for now, to again search on World Connect.
  • Keyboard Mnemonics: Keyboard mnemonics were added to some of the newer screens in version 16.
  • Check/Repair: Check/Repair now compares the relationship 'same-sex' status against the gender of the partners, and if needed, sets the relationship status to match the partners gender status.

Bug Fixes to General Features

  • Same Sex Relationship Flag: Users with some builds of Windows 10 reported that the Relationship screen showed the status flag for traditional couples as same-sex. The underlying data was correct, but the display was sometimes shown incorrectly. This was not a problem for most users. Fixed.
  • FamilySearch Menu: If you had disabled AQ's ability to sync with FamilySearch, the FamilySearch menu was not turned off. Fixed.

Bug Fixes to FamilySearch and LDS Features

  • Advanced Source Importing from FamilySearch: While creating the Video Tutorial on how to use the Advanced Importing of Sources from FamilySearch, and on converting already imported sources from FamilySearch into structured AQ sources, a few minor display issues were discovered and fixed. (The video was created with these fixes in place. This build makes those fixes available to users.)
  • Memories Manager: FamilySearch made a change in their API that partially broke AQ's ability to read a full list of memories from FamilySearch, particularly when the list was long. This caused a few side-effects in AQ's Memories Manager screen. This build provides some corresponding adjustments so that AQ again reads the full list of memories.
  • Confirmation/Initiatory Ordinances on Family Group Record: If you are displaying LDS temple ordinances, and have set the preference to handle the Confirmation and Initiatory ordinances, the FGR now displays these.

Changes in Build 2 (10/22/2019)

Bug Fixes to General Features

  • Find/Replace on Full Names: In the rare case that you were replacing a place name with 5 place levels, and it found this in a "Death" event, the replace would fail. Fixed
  • Freeform Citations: When you first entered the Citation screen, if you were using a Freeform source which used the '%C' parameter to include citation details in the source reference, the Sample Footnote did not initially display correctly. Fixed

Bug Fixes to FamilySearch and LDS Features

  • Review/Sync Individual Screen: If you select events/facts to download from FamilySearch, then before saving, you clicked on the button to view Parents/Siblings or Spouses/Children, the changes didn't save. Fixed.
  • Confirmation/Initiatory Ordinances on Individual Edit Screen: There were some problems with moving from field to field with the keyboard, and using the Ditto Down (F9) key. Fixed.

A few other minor enhancements and fixes were made.
